Family Matters - New Baby

In the early weeks of your new baby's life you will find many friends and family wanting to come and see the new baby. They will all mean well and that is lovely, but it is you and your new family that matters so your needs must come first. Here are a few tips for coping with wellwishers.

  • Get any potential visitors to contact you first to check that it is a good time to come round. Via text is preferable, in case they wake a sleeping baby! Even if it's a pre-arranged thing they ought to check with you first to make sure that it's convenient.
  • Leave mugs and tea/coffee making facilities on the side in the kitchen. Invite guests to help themselves and make sure they get you a cuppa whilst they're there!
  • Arrange an exchange with guests - cuddles for help! You will find a sister or close friend more than happy to run the hoover round for you in exchange for a hold of baby. Ask your parents if they'd mind bringing round a nice hot meal when they visit their grandchild too.
  • Everyone will want to give you baby-advice. Listen to it, thank them for it, but don't feel guilty for ignoring it. Do what you feel is right for you and your family and you won't go far wrong.
  • If this isn't your first child, ask grandparents to bring a small present for your other children too if possible. Seeing the new baby get lots of cuddles and presents won't help with jealousy issues.

 Last but not least;

  • Don't be afraid to say no. If you're not up to visitors for whatever reason then you're well within your rights to ask them to arrange a visit for another time. They will understand!
