Sibling Rivalry
Sibling Rivalry
Jealousy can be quite big problem with some children, when a new brother or sister enters their world and they now have to share your love and affection with another, while some children don’t find it a problem at all.
It is said that the age gap has a great affect on the strength of jealousy. A 2-4 yr gap can quite often cause the worst jealousy, while if the gap is greater than 5yrs it seems to be less of a problem; the same applies if it is less than 18mths.
Prepare your child for the arrival of a new baby
There are a few things that may be done to reduce the jealous feelings before the arrival of their new brother or sister.
- Let your child help prepare things in advance for the arrival of the new baby, whether it's sorting out the new clothes or organising the nursery with you.
- Have a present ready for your existing child(ren) from the new arrival, thanking them for being their new Big Brother or Sister.
- Your child needs to learn that newborns can't do anything for themselves and take up a lot of time meaning that they will need a lot of Mummies attention. Try to involve your child with chores that would help you with the baby, such as fetching nappies or singing them a lullaby.
- Try not to make too many big changes to your existing children's routine when baby is due or has just been born. They may resent this and associate the disruption to their new sibling.
- Another useful tip is your child could have their own doll and pretend it is their new baby, and you could read one of the many useful books on the subject of new babies with your child(ren) to the doll.
