Starting Primary School
When it comes to starting school it will be a major event to your child. They start to learn of their independence and maturity.
Preparation
In the first few days of starting their school your child will meet new faces, places and rules. This can be very frightening for your child – but exciting at the same time. It may help your child if you treat it as an ‘adventure’ of sorts.
These are few things you can do with your child before school starts:
Take your child to the school at least once, this way they could visit their classroom and see where they are going to be and meet their new teacher.
Show him/her where they will be hanging their coat and bag. They could also see the playground.
It would be helpful if you could find out the daily routine from the teacher, so you can explain to your child and they will know what order things will happen in.
Whenever you go past the school, make sure you let your child know that’s where they’ll be going.
Other things to consider When buying your child’s school uniform get it done start fairly early so you know you have everything, but remember to bear in mind they grow quickly! Shoes may be better left till last, but make sure you get your child professionally measured – the last thing you want on their first day is to have tears from blisters!
Another thing you could do is have a checklist of all the things you need to remember like:
Trousers/Skirt/Pinafore
Shirts or T-Shirts
School Jumper
Vests
Socks
School Shoes
P.E kit
Plimsoles
Book Bag
Lunch Box
Drinks container etc.
The day before starting school, let your child help get their lunch and bag ready and set out their uniform for the morning, this way they can feel totally involved.
The big day is here and you’re probably feeling quite emotional, try your best to leave your child with a smile, your child will soon settle and be happy within their new routine. Once the day is over it is wise to have a stock of snacks and drinks, your child will be feeling tired and hungry and of course be in need of a big cuddle. They will talk about their day in their own time, don’t push too much for answers, it’s a lot for them to take in, they’ll soon be desperate to share what they have been up to with you.
