Underweight
Underweight
Being underweight can carry many of the same health risks as being overweight. Your body needs minimum calorie content each day to work to its optimum, and as a woman you need a healthy amount of fat on your body to remain fertile. If you are very underweight ovulation may stop. If you have done the BMI calculator and your BMI has come out as underweight, or you have recently lost weight and have no explanation for it there could be many reasons as to why:
Medical Issues The first step is to consult your GP; there are many health issues which can cause weight loss / inability to put weight on for example thyroid issues or some types of worms. It is always best to get checked out so go for a full blood count and explain any other symptoms you may be having. It might be an idea to do a food / exercise diary for a week beforehand so the doctor can have an idea of what you are currently eating and doing activity wise. Diet / Exercise
You may find that if you do a lot of exercise you need to eat more / higher calorie foods in order to maintain a weight level.. Food is actually very important as part of an exercise plan as you need to eat enough carbs to give your body the energy it needs and enough protein to enable the body to build muscle if you are aiming to tone up. You may find a small snack 30 mins after exercise is enough to help you put on a little weight, or stop losing weight.
Small Appetite If you struggle to eat big meals that doesn’t mean you always have to be underweight – try having 4/5 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones… it is said that eating little and often is far more beneficial nutritionally than 3 square meals too. Stress
It is common that during stressful times, we either overindulge in food or feel sick at the thought of it. If you are the type of person who can’t eat when stressed it might be worth talking through anything which is on your mind with a friend or a counsellor if you feel it may help.
