Eating disorders can be triggered during times of stress at any age and can affect both men and women. They can lead to both weight gain and weight loss, they are always important to get under control and can severely affect your health and wellbeing. Most eating disorders are subconsciously about regaining control of something in your life – food. If things are happening which are outside of your control you may feel that this is one area you CAN control. Types of eating disorder can include: - Anorexia – not eating, or dramatically cutting down of food intake
- Bulimia – struggling to eat in public, normally followed by purging the contents of the stomach
- Binge Eating – Comfort eating or regularly eating large quantities of food, usually when alone.
If you think you or someone close to you may have an eating disorder it is important to seek help immediately. Go and see your GP and explain how you are feeling, you may be referred to a dietician and or for counselling. If the disorder is advanced, it may be advised that you are admitted to a residential program.
