Miscarriage

Miscarriage is defined as the loss of a pregnancy before 24 weeks (after that it would be classified as stillbirth). The rate of miscarriage is much higher than most people realise (approximately 1 in 4), so the chances are that you know someone (or many people) who have first hand experience of it. People seem to not talk about miscarriage – but if you mention that you have suffered one, most people will have comforting words of experience.

Most miscarriages happen within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, with some occurring so early that the woman doesn’t know she was pregnant – this is also known as a chemical pregnancy.
