Symptoms and Treatment
Symptoms commonly include bleeding and / or cramping for the mother. If you experience any kind of bleeding or pain which you are worried about during pregnancy PLEASE SPEAK TO YOUR MIDWIFE. She may be able to get you in for an emergency scan if she believes your symptoms warrant it.
If you experience sharp pain to one side of your pelvis area this could be a symptom of an ectopic pregnancy, this is a potentially life threatening complication, so if you are unsure GO STRAIGHT TO A&E.
There can be other symptoms of miscarriage such as a change in your normal pregnancy symptoms – but there can also be no symptoms at all (as with some missed miscarriages)
One thing to note is that many of the symptoms of miscarriage can seem very similar to those of early pregnancy – particularly if this is your first pregnancy! If in doubt, call your midwife!
Treatment
If a miscarriage has been confirmed by your doctor or a scan at hospital, further treatment is not generally needed. If bleeding is severe or does not stop after a week or so, or you do not bleed at all – a minor operation called an ERPC may be required to fully remove the pregnancy from your uterus. It is performed under a general anaesthetic and is usually a day case so there would be no need to stay overnight.
