Miscarriage at different stages
Miscarriage at different stages
There are many different types of miscarriage, generally classed by what stage the pregnancy was lost and how. Some of the more common types are detailed below:
- Chemical Pregnancy – this is classed as a very early pregnancy loss when lost before 6 weeks. It may not even be known to the mother.
- Blighted Ovum – This is where the sac develops normally but the embryo is either missing, or stops growing very early.
- Missed Miscarriage – this is defined as a pregnancy which has ended, yet the baby hasn’t yet been expelled from the mother (prior to 24 weeks). This may show no change in symptoms (in which case it would be discovered at the 12 week scan probably), or by a sudden stopping of symptoms – which you should ALWAYS mention to your midwife. This type of miscarriage could require a procedure called an ERPC (evacuation of the products of conception) which would be performed under a general anaesthetic as a day case operation.
- Spontaneous Abortion is a ‘standard’ miscarriage where the mother has cramping / bleeding, followed by the loss of the baby prior to 24 weeks.
- Incomplete Abortion – This is where some of the pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus following a miscarriage. It may require an ERPC to remove the remainder.
